Embryo transfer
The informative value and reproducibility of animal experiments is significantly influenced by the housing conditions:
The hygiene status and especially its changes in the current experiment have a decisive influence on the quality of the results in experiments with animals

Rehabilitation of mouse and rat lines via embryo transfer

- Mouse and rat lines are sanitized by transferring in vivo or in vitro produced bicells into sham pregnant dams with SPF status.
⇒ Because donors must be bred in quarantine at FEM, the transgenic technologies laboratory requires at least 4 males and 6 to 8 females between 4 and 8 weeks of age.
- Alternatively, it is possible to generate the required embryos via in vitro fertilization.
⇒ This requires 4 males at about 12 weeks of age.
In addition to import via embryos obtained fresh, the laboratory of transgenic technologies offers the possibility of using cryopreserved material (embryos and sperm).
The costs for this service can be found in the current fee schedule of the FEM (please ask at the FEM secretary's office).
Compliance with FELASA guidelines
After transfer, the nurses are kept in isolators for 10 weeks before the health status of these animals is checked.
Only if the health status meets the FELASA guidelines, the animals are introduced into the SPF unit and bred there.
